Excellent little amplified speakerJun 08, 2010
By Mark Vos I just returned from a high-adventure backpacking trip to the red sandstone-canyons in southern Utah. As a scout leader, I took one of these X-Mini speaker balls in my backpack to amplify a portable DVD player I had been carrying for a surprise presentation for the boys. On camping night two, while camped in a giant cavern along a stream between two ancient, red canyon walls, I pulled out the DVD player from my pack and plugged in this X-Mini so that our party of 18 could all hear. It worked beyond my wildest expectations. The DVD presentation depended 90% on the audio portion, and 10% on the video, because the video portion was only to see the demeanor of the speech maker. The X-Mini made sure we all heard the speech loudly and clearly around the campsite in the giant cavern. The boys were moved by the religious speech, the other leaders were impressed with the small but effective technology, and I became known as Inspector Gadget.
We got this speaker ball when my wife brought it home as a door prize from the Bonnie Hunt show. I thought it was another, passive and tinny little iPod speaker, but to my surprise it had its own built-in amp with rechargeable battery, great connectivity, and excellent sound for its size. It's about the size of a handball, and with a 1/4 twist, it expands accordion-like to allow for deeper tone. You won't get deep musical bass out of this, but it does do well with male voice, doesn't distort as other such items do, and sounds excellent. The family and I love it. Because my teenage daughter has adopted it (other than during my backpacking trip), I plan to get one and give others for Christmas.

Better then expected.Jan 28, 2011
By stevelot The complaints about the short audio connector overlook a feature that is not advertised. These speakers come with a 3 foot combination audio and USB charging cable. The speakers play through the USB mini plug and audio plug on the cable. I plug the audio plug into my IPOD and the mini USB into the speaker and I can place the speaker 3 Ft. away. I also have a second X-Mini. I use the combo charging cable that came with it to connect this speaker to the first through the buddy port. I just plug the audio pin into the first speaker buddy port and the mini USB plug into the second speaker. Now I can put the first speaker 3 feet from my IPOD and the second speaker 3 feet away from the first. The seperation sounds close to stereo. I also found that by using the IPOD EQ feature found in Settings > Music I can get the best sound for my taste. The Apple AC charger that I bought as an accessory for my IPOD charges the speakers without having to use my computer. I like these speakers a lot.

Lives up to 85% of the hypeDec 30, 2010
By David A. Chapman Pros: -Very portable -Seems good quality, though I wonder if the "stretch" in the open position will wear out? -Quite loud sound and fairly clear
Cons: -The audio cable is extremely short -The sound had a couple buzzes here and there; good sound, fairly clear, but not quite as amazing as the hype said
I am only operating on one of these. Perhaps with 2-4 speakers, the sound would improve.

Excellent small speakerNov 22, 2010
By bestloeh Small and stylish. Bought it as a gift to my wife and she fell in love with it right away. "So cute!" was her first impression. The sound is not loud though, just enough for her to listen to music while working from home.

Great Little ProcductFeb 07, 2011
By D. Johnson Love this speaker, will get another one soon if i can figure out whether i can get stereo out of them. Charges very quickly, has great sound, and is very portable. I lost the speakers on my laptop due to a factory defect in the wiring and it is just too much of a hassle to solder and reconnect them. This is the perfect solution. It lasts me about 1 week and charges within hours. I leave it constantly plugged in except the usb charger which i disconnect when it has fully charged. This is a lithium ion battery and i suspect has to be conditioned just like a laptop battery at initial use, at least that is what i am doing. Have had it about two weeks now.
